Professional Development Scholarship

    Prince William Society for Human Resource Management’s (PW SHRM) mission is to enhance the capabilities of Human Resources professionals who live and/or work in our community. This Scholarship is designed to provide financial support to individuals in need who want to grow professionally.

    For the 2019-2020 Scholarship year, PWSHRM will donate up to $1,000 each to two people for any of the following:

    • SHRM/HRCI Certification prep class tuition or test fees
    • April 2020 HR Virginia State Conference
    • 2020 SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition

    Eligibility & Requirements

    For the 2019-2020 Scholarship year, PWSHRM will donate up to $1,000 each to two people for any of the following:

    • SHRM/HRCI Certification prep class tuition or test fees
    • April 2020 HR Virginia State Conference
    • 2020 SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition
    • Be a member in good standing with Prince William SHRM; or

    Application Requirements:
    • 2019 Certification Course or Exam

    • SHRM: exam/course in the 2019 or 2020 calendar year

    • HRCI: must follow the restrictions set by HRCI (HRCI vouchers have a very specific expiration date – 365 days from the date of purchase)

    All options require submittal of a completed Application (click on apply online button above), Letter of Reference, and a completed and signed Employer Statement.

    Selection & Review Process

    • Scholarships announced May 1, 2019
    • Applications received and acknowledged May 2 – September 1, 2019
    • Scholarship Committee to meet, review and select- September 2019
    • Winners announced at PWSHRM Annual Employment Law & HR Summit on October 11, 2019

    The College Relations Director will track and confirm (via email) all Applications received.

    The Scholarship Committee, made up of at least 4 Prince William SHRM Board Members (College Relations Director, President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President) who are not participating in the Scholarship Program, will then review all applications and eliminate anyone who does not meet the basic qualifications for the program. Incomplete or ineligible applications will not be considered and clearly communicated as disqualification via email.

    Selection Criteria:

    The Scholarship Committee will select two individuals with a financial need whom they believe are most likely to leverage the opportunity. They will seek candidates who are eager to learn and plan to apply the skills and knowledge gained to benefit their careers, their organizations, and their communities. New HR professionals are encouraged to apply.

    Awards Procedure

    • Certification/Course Option

      Awards are granted per the certification/course chosen.  You may only select one exam/course.


    1. Upon your selection of an exam, PWSHRM will provide you with a voucher that will allow you to purchase the application fee and exam fee with no out-of-pocket expense to you.
    2. Vouchers expire 365 days after the date of purchase.


    1. Upon registering for the SHRM exam, at the time of check out, select the option to be ‘invoiced’. Present the invoice to the College Relations Director for payment.
    2. Invoice submitted must match the certification listed on application. If they do not match, the invoice will not be paid, and candidate will be disqualified.
    3. Upon receipt and review of the invoice, PWSHRM will submit payment directly to SHRM and return a receipt of payment to the award recipient for their records.
    • 2020 HR Virginia Conference or SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition Option

    If awarded the Scholarship, PWSHRM will reimburse the price of conference registration upon receiving a receipt of registration from the award recipient.  Registration includes all conference-planned sessions, some meals, breaks, reception and entertainment.  Please note: Hotel costs and travel reimbursements are not included in registration. 


    Expections of Recipients 

    If selected for an award, applicants must confirm their ability to attend the event. Winners will be expected to maintain a current PWSHRM membership throughout 2019-2020. Scholarship winners will also be expected to provide a follow-up interview to PWSHRM to discuss their experiences and share what they learned.
